Moving to Brussels with your own car: the Low Emission Zone rules to check first
Your furniture travels by truck, but your car may well make the trip on its own wheels. Before it crosses into Brussels, one rule deserves five minutes of your attention: the Low Emission Zone (LEZ). Here is what it means for newcomers, based on the official LEZ website.
A zone that covers the whole Region
The LEZ applies to the entire Brussels-Capital Region, which consists of 19 municipalities. The Ring is excluded, as are some roads leading to certain transit car parks. All cars, vans and (mini)buses registered in Belgium or abroad are concerned.
Does your car meet the access criteria?
The criteria depend on the fuel and the Euro standard of the vehicle:
- Diesel: at least Euro 6.
- Petrol, CNG and LPG: at least Euro 3.
Since 1 January 2026, Euro 5 diesel and Euro 2 petrol vehicles no longer meet the access criteria. A non-compliant vehicle can be fined 350 euros; the LEZ website explains the current sanction rules in detail. Check your vehicle's Euro standard before you plan to drive in.
Foreign plates: register your vehicle
According to the LEZ registration page, all vehicles registered abroad must be registered, except vehicles from the Netherlands, which only need to be registered if they do not meet the access criteria.
- Cost: registration is free.
- Validity: five years.
- Timing: before you enter the LEZ, or within five days of entering.
- What you need: the vehicle registration certificate.
Fit it into your moving checklist
- Two to three weeks before: check the Euro standard of your car and register it if it has foreign plates.
- Moving day: let us take care of the furniture, the boxes and the lift, while you drive with your essentials.
